Network Installation

If you have purchased a network license version of the software then you can install as many copies of the QuadriSpace client licenses as you desire and a single instance of the QuadriSpace Network License server. The network license edition allows multiple users to share a single license of Document3D. Any number of users can use the license, but only one user can use an instance of the license at any given time.  In order for this to be possible, you must dedicate a single computer running Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista to act as a license server.  The Document3D network client must have access to this server to be able to run or check out a roaming license.

Network License Server

Network License Server Introduction

The QuadriSpace Network License Server is based on Reprise License Manager from Reprise Software.  Before setting up the server, you will need to provide some information to QuadriSpace Corporation for them to issue an appropriate license file.  Please note the following facts about the QuadriSpace network license file.

Providing the HostID 5o QuadriSpace Support

Before issuing a server license file, you need to decide which windows based computer will be your server, and submit information about that computer to QuadriSpace Corporation.  You can do this by downloading and running the QuadriSpace HostID utility from http://www.quadrispace.com/support/HostID.exe.  This is a simple program that will determine the unique HostID for you computer, and help you to submit that HostID to QuadriSpace.  Once QuadriSpace receives the information, you will be provided with a signed, node locked, time expired network license file.  You will need this file while installing the server.

Installing the License Server

The QuadriSpace License Server runs as a Service on a Windows based computer.  The License Server MUST be installed by a user with administration privileges.  You should have both the QuadriSpace License Server installer and the license file issued to you by QuadriSpace before you install the License Server.

The Install program will walk you through the steps to Install and Setup the License Server.

The Install Program will:

Starting the Server

The QuadriSpace License Server runs as a service on Windows.  The service is initially set to run "automatically".  That is, it will start whenever you start the computer.  If for some reason you need to manually start the service, you can do this by selecting Start -> All Programs -> QuadriSpace Server 2006 -> Start Server.  Additional Server Settings can be accessed through Windows Configuration utilities by opening Control Panel, selecting Administrative Tools and selecting Services.  You can scroll down to the service named rlm_quadrispace and start, stop or further configure the service.

Stopping the Server

The QuadriSpace License Server can be stopped by selecting Start -> All Programs -> QuadriSpace Server 2006 -> Stop Server or by using the Windows Configuration utilities as described in Starting the Server.

Monitoring the Server  and Server Status

A web server is available for monitoring the license server.  By default, this server runs on port 9000 of the server system.  When on the server, the web monitor can be opened by selecting Start -> All Programs -> QuadriSpace Server 2006 -> Monitor Server.  The web monitor can also be accessed remotely by pointing your web browser to http://<machine_name>:9000 where machine name is the name, or IP number of the server system.

Logging Network Server Activity

Server activity is logged to <Installation Direcory>/dlog.txt, where <Installation Directory> is the directory that you installed ther server files to.  If you are having problems accessing the server, please check this file for any information on problems that may have occured when running the server.

Connecting to the Server

Document3D network clients will need to know how to access the Network Server.  This is done by setting the RLM_LICENSE environment variable on the client system to be port@host where port is the port that the server is running on and host is the hostname of the server computer.  The license server normally runs on port 2764, so if the server name is BOB, then the client will need to set RLM_LICENSE to 2764@BOB.  For your convenience, the client install program can set this for you.  You can either enter the license path directly when prompted during the install, or you can provide an install options file.  The install options file MUST be in the same directory as the network client installer and MUST be named install.opt.  The syntax of the file is shown below.

RLM_LICENSE=2764@BOB

If in doubt, then server name and port number are shown in the web base network license monitor.

Uninstalling the Server

The Network License Server can be uninstalled by the Add / Remove Programs facility in Windows.

The uninstall utility will:

Changing Licenses

Over time, your Document3D licenses will expire and need to be replaced with new licenses.  To change the active license file:

Alternatively, you can uninstall and reinstall the Network License server and follow the steps in the installer.

Changing Servers

Since QuadriSpace license files are node-locked, if you need to change servers, then you will need to contact QuadriSpace and have a new license file issued.  Once you have done this, then you can follow the steps above for uninstalling on the old server computer and installing on the new server computer.

Network License Clients

Installation

The Document3D client can install a stand alone version of Document3D, or it can install the Document3D network client.  You merely need to select your type of install in the installer.  After selecting Network, you will be prompted for the Network License Path.  This information should be provided to you by your network administrator.  If you do not have this information, please leave this selection blank.  It is possible that this information is already filled in for you by means of an installer options file.  If this is the case, do NOT change this information.

The Document3D network client contains Pages3D, Publisher3D, the 3D PDF Exporter, and the Granite Loader.  The network license server determines which of these program will be available to you.

Once installed, running a network client such as Pages3D or Publisher3D will attempt to acquire a license from the network server.  If it is unable to acquire a license then the software will not be able to run, and you will be shown an error message that asks you to provide or modify the network license path.  Only change this path with information provided by your network administrator.  It is possible that you are experiencing a temporary network outage, and changing this information could prevent Document3D from obtaining a network license in the future.

Once a network license has been obtained the software will run.  The features available can be viewed on the Help About menu option.

Network License Roaming

QuadriSpace realizes that from time to time it may be necessary to use QuadriSpace software while you are not on your network.  This ability is available through Network License Roaming.

Network License Roaming allows you to check out a license from the Network License Server for a limited amount of time (up to 30 days).  Once you have checked out this license, you will be able to run Document3D without being connected to the network.  You should be aware that the license you checked out will be unavailable to other network users for the entire checkout time, regardless of whether or not you are using the software.

To check out a license:

Now you should be able to run your Document3D software while not connected to the network for the number of days you have chosen. For your convenience, every time you connect to the license server (by running a QuadriSpace product on your network) the roaming counter will be reset.
